As wastewater treatment facilities evolve into resource recovery facilities, wastewater has begun to be perceived as a source of valuable resources, including carbon, phosphorus and nitrogen. From sequencing batch reactors for biological treatment to cloth media filters for tertiary treatment, our solutions help improve effluent quality, remove nutrients and contaminants, and support water reuse applications. Moreover, energy from treated effluent can be recovered by heat pumps using gasketed plate-and-frame heat exchangers.
Alfa Laval also supports efficient solids handling with technologies for sludge thickening and dewatering. Rotary drum thickeners, gravity belt thickeners and thickening centrifuges are typically used to increase the solids concentration of sludge from primary and secondary clarifiers, while belt presses and dewatering centrifuges provide efficient final dewatering with optimized energy use, cake dryness and chemical consumption.
For utilities using anaerobic digestion to convert biodegradable organic matter into biogas, spiral heat exchangers provide an efficient solution for maintaining the optimal digester temperature and supporting more sustainable operation.
